The Upside Down Movie is an unfinished special episode that was fully scripted by David Collins and Shane Dundas from 2008 to 2010. It was planned to act as the proper series finale of The Upside Down Show.

The movie was first announced by the newspaper The Australian in August 2008. (source) In November 2008, David Collins announced in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald that the movie was planned to start filming in 2009. (source)

Nickelodeon Australia funded the script development, but the crew needed financial support from outside investors to start filming, which never happened in 2009. Collins started an online petition in 2010 (source) to show public interest in the movie, but it never gained enough support and the project has been in limbo ever since.

History

Plans for the movie were first revealed in August 2008, when The Australian reported that a movie based on the show was being produced. (source) Less than a month later, the Umbilical Brothers announced that "there is a script in development for a movie version of The Upside Down Show." (source)

In November 2008, another newspaper -- the Sydney Morning Herald -- published an interview with the Umbilical Brothers. The interview stated that the film was planned to start filming in 2009, and that it would be titled The Upside Down Movie. They wrote:

"Next year the Umbies will begin filming their first feature film, The Upside Down Movie, a spin-off from their hit children's television series The Upside Down Show." (source)

In 2009, David Collins starred in a stage play called "The Mikado," and the playbill mentioned The Upside Down Movie. It said, referring to David and Shane: "This year they are filming The Upside Down Movie." (source, see page 7)

The filming never occurred in 2009. In January 2010, David Collins announced that the script had been finished but that outside financing was an issue. He also confirmed that Nickelodeon Australia was "hugely supportive of trying to get the film made and have been partially funding the script development." (source)

David Collins and Shane Dundas started an online petition in 2010 to demonstrate public interest in the movie, but the project did not receive enough support from outside investors to start filming. (source)

Further updates

From 2008 to 2011, the moderator of the Umbilical Brothers' official website gave several updates about the movie's progress and production.

  • September 19, 2008: "Well the plan as of now (and i always say that cuz we all know things can change in the blink of an eye) is to have a cinema release in Oz...release internationally is still up in the air..could be cinema, could be straight to dvd..." (source)
  • December 2, 2008: "Latest word is the director being lined up for the project is Peter Cudlipp...one of the directors used in the UDS series." (source)
  • February 8, 2009: "I don't know about Noggin airing the movie, but I do know that we in the States will be able to see the movie in one form or another. Either by cinema release or direct to DVD...according to Mr. Bourchier [the producer]. But that's still a bit in the future...they're still working on a final version of the script and (as always) financing." (source)

David Collins has also posted two updates about it, in 2017 and 2019.

  • In March 2017, David confirmed that he was still trying to find support for the movie. (source)
  • In September 2019, in response to a fan's comment about wanting to see the movie, David Collins wrote: "right!? perhaps we should try a kickstarter." (source)
  • In October 2019, in a comment on the Umbilical Brothers' YouTube channel, David Collins wrote: "we've been trying to get money to do a movie for years now. Never happened." (source)

Movie details

Very little information about the movie's storyline was revealed. However, it is known that the movie was actually planned not to follow the show's basic episode structure. In September 2008, in response to questions about the plot, the moderator of the Umbilical Brothers' website said:

"Don't be surprised if the script isn't exactly like the format of the UDS....but hey, that doesn't mean we can't talk about what our favorite new places to visit would be...carry on!" (source)
